Pop-up car meets like the gathering that attracted 1,000 people are a hazard during the coronavirus pandemic, but police say they are hard to stop

EAST HARTFORD — Quickly organized car meets such as a recent gathering in East Hartford that ended with a triple shooting present a vexing challenge to public health during the coronavirus pandemic, local and state officials said.

The crowd of about 1,000 people on East River Drive Sunday night and early Monday is exactly the kind of large cluster with virus-spreading potential that authorities have been working so hard to prevent, Max Reiss, spokesman for Gov. Ned Lamont, said Tuesday.

However, because such events are unsanctioned and often announced only an hour in advance, they are hard to stop.
