Police: New Haven teen killed by stray bullet while she slept inside her home

New Haven detectives believe a young woman was killed early Wednesday morning when an errant bullet fired from the street outside her home missed its intended target and hit her in the head while she slept.

The death of Kiana Brown, 19, was ruled an untimely death initially but now is being investigated as a homicide, Capt. Anthony Duff said.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to Brown's home at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday for a report of an unconscious person inside the Valley Street home in West Rock, Duff said.

Paramedics tried to help Brown at the scene before rushing her to Yale New Haven Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Duff said.
