One man dead, another badly hurt in Meriden crash

A man was killed Saturday when the car he was riding in spun around and slammed into a utility pole, Meriden police said Monday.

The pole snapped and came through the rear of the Honda Civic, striking and killing front seat passenger Xavier Alamo, 33, of Meriden, police said Monday. The driver, Byron Garcia, 24, also of Meriden, was in critical condition, police said.

Police were alerted to the crash in the area of 884 Old Colony Road at about 10:20 p.m. Alamo was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Garcia,who had been ejected and was lying in the roadway, was rushed to Hartford Hospital.
