New York man turns himself in for beheading Waterbury Christopher Columbus statue

A man from Port Chester, New York turned himself in Thursday for beheading the Christopher Columbus statue in front of Waterbury’s city hall on July 4. Police said the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m.

Police had obtained an arrest warrant and were actively searching for Brandon Ambrose, 22, before he turned himself in to the Waterbury police. He was charged with criminal mischief, desecration of property, and larceny.

Detectives had previously discovered that Ambrose was trying to sell the statue’s nose and later determined he was the same person who broke the statue.

Ambrose was released on a $1,500 bond.
