A New Haven mother was shot in the back Tuesday morning while crossing the street with her groceries and 2-year-old daughter.
The 30-year-old woman survived her injury and her daughter was not hurt, police said Tuesday afternoon.
Detectives believe the pair were innocent bystanders nearly slain by gunfire that erupted just after 11:30 a.m. on a nearby sidewalk where several men were gathered near a residential building, Capt. Anthony Duff said. Investigators found evidence of gunshots on the sidewalk, in the roadway and near the building, he added.
The woman was transported to a hospital and released later Tuesday afternoon and Yale Child Study Center clinicians met with the uninjured child and the victim’s family at the scene.
