New Canaan woman’s death first reported as ‘accidental shooting’ by husband was likely an ‘intentional act,’ prosecutors say

A New Canaan man who initially told police his wife died when his shotgun accidentally went off in their basement Thursday morning may actually have shot her on purpose, police and prosecutors said.

Albert Kokoth, 77, appeared in Superior Court in Stamford on Friday and currently is charged with second-degree assault, second-degree assault with a firearm and illegal discharge of a firearm but is likely to face additional charges as the investigation continues, Assistant State’s Attorney Daniel Cummings said.

“Substantial progress has been made on the investigation and it’s now becoming pretty clear the defendant’s version of events is not consistent with the evidence and this appears to be an intentional act,” Cummings said.
