Milford man charged with hate crime after yelling ‘Go back to China’ to man walking down street

A Milford man was charged with second-degree harassment and third-degree intimidation based on bigotry, a hate crime, after he yelled “Go back to China,” to a man walking down the street Tuesday.

Joseph Rohrig, 38, was driving near Hill Street and W Town Street, when he pulled up to a man walking with a mask on, police said. He began to “berate the male victim for wearing a mask outdoors and told the victim to ‘Go back to China,’ ” they said.

The incident comes amid reports of an increase in incidents of anti-Asian racism across the country.
