A man was wounded early Wednesday in West Hartford as gunfire erupted from speeding cars, one of which crashed.

The shooting happened shortly before 1:20 a.m. in the area of North Main and Fern streets, police said. The wounded man was taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Police said two speeding cars apparently were involved, but stopped short of calling it a shootout. The cars are believed to have traveled north on Troutbrook Drive, near West Hartford Center and the Kingswood Oxford school, and west on Fern Street, where one crashed.
