A man standing next to a disabled car on the highway in Southbury at dusk Friday was struck by an oncoming car and killed, state police said, and a woman was seriously injured.

Michael Canby, 36, of Spindle Hill in Wolcott died at the scene, they said. Cynthia Geary Northrop, 72, of Georges Hill Road in Southbury was injured.

The crash happened about 5:50 p.m. on I-84 west before Exit 15. It followed a less serious accident, state police said, and Canby and Northrop were standing next to Northrop’s damaged 2010 Nissan Sentra.

A westbound 2007 Honda Pilot struck the Nissan, which caused the Nissan to hit Northrop.
