Ledyard wins a marathon court case that began with its effort to impose property taxes on the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe’s casino slot machines

The state Supreme Court gave the town of Ledyard a $1 million legal victory Wednesday, settling a long-running dispute with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe that began more than 15 years ago when the town decided it was going to tax the sovereign tribal nation for slot machines it leased for its Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Much of the $1 million or so is legal fees the town spent in its marathon effort to collect a $18,000 tax bill in 2006,

The tribe has long contended that everything on its reservation - which is within Ledyard - is protected by federal law from state and local taxation because of its status as a sovereign tribal nation.
