James English Jr., who led Trinity College in the 1980s, dies at 93

James English Jr., the civic-minded bank president who led Trinity College in Hartford for most of the 1980s, died on June 2. He was 93.

English took over as Trinity’s president in 1981, after serving as vice president for finance and planning. At the time, the school was facing some fiscal challenges.

English’s background in finance and his roots in Hartford made him a strong candidate, Dr. George W. B. Starkey, chairman of the board of trustees, told the Trinity Reporter, the school’s alumni magazine, in 1981.

“He brings to the position an unusual combination of talent and experience in the business and education sectors,'' Starkey said.
