An impaired driver struck and killed a man and hit a utility pole Monday night in New Haven, police said Tuesday.

The 39-year-old driver has been charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, they said. More charges are expected.

The crash happened at the intersection of Ella Grasso Boulevard and Orange Avenue shortly before 8:30 p.m. First responders found a severely injured pedestrian in the road and a car crashed into a pole, Capt. Anthony Duff said. The pedestrian, who police learned was 52, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The intersection was closed throughout the night and into the morning, reopening about 5 a.
