Officers were called just before 4:30 p.m. to an apartment at 464 Wethersfield Ave., near Meadow Street, for a report of the injured man, Lt. Aaron Boisvert said.
He was alert and conscious when emergency personnel arrived and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, Boisvert added.
Police do not yet know what happened just before the shooting and Major Crimes Division detectives have taken over the investigation.
