Hamden police say shoplifter claimed to have COVID-19, tried to spit on officer

A man caught shoplifting at a supermarket claimed to be infected with the coronavirus and tried to spit on a police officer who confronted him Saturday, police said.

Juan Acevedo, 48, of New Haven, was arrested and charged with attempted assault of a police officer, interfering with police, sixth-degree larceny and criminal trespass. Acevedo was held on bail of $25,000 and is to appear in court on July 6.

Officer Keron Bryce was working an extra duty assignment at Stop & Shop on Dixwell Avenue when a security guard told him about a potential shoplifter, police said Monday.
