MANCHESTER — A suspected car thief sideswiped a police vehicle early Tuesday while fleeing from a Buckland Hills Drive apartment complex, police said.

The officer was not hurt, and Manchester police said Hartford police later took three juveniles into custody in connection with the theft of the car involved in the incident.

Manchester police were alerted to suspicious activity at the Pavilions Apartments at about 4:30 a.m. A resident who was leaving for work said four people who arrived in a white sedan were checking car doors, police said.

Officers spotted the Kia Optima in the parking lot behind 345 Buckland Hills Drive, but the driver escaped after driving head-on at a responding officer’s vehicle, sideswiping the police car before speeding away west toward I-84.
