Fireworks may have started train-stopping brush fire in Fairfield, fire official says

Fireworks might have sparked a large brush fire that caused firefighter injuries and stopped Metro North trains in Fairfield Sunday night, a fire official said.

The large fire in a marsh behind 36 Chestnut St. was reported about 9 p.m., Lt. Robert Smith said. Neighbors said they heard fireworks in the area before they saw the flames.

As firetrucks arrived, the fire began spreading across the area between Chestnut Street and Grasmere Avenue, Smith said. Firefighters from Norwalk and Bridgeport arrived to help battle the fire, which had to be fought from three different locations.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries, Smith said.
