Despite long battle described as ‘heroic’ and ‘valiant,’ West Hartford police sergeant dies of cancer

Sgt. Christopher Tyler, a 33-year-old West Hartford police officer and father of two who battled brain cancer for more than five years, has died.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of West Hartford Police Sergeant Christopher Tyler,” the department announced Tuesday afternoon on Facebook. “Sergeant Tyler lost his courageous battle with cancer on Monday.”

Tyler’s struggle since his diagnosis in late 2015 had made him well known throughout the community, and friends and residents have raised tens of thousands of dollars to help the Tyler family over the years.

He endured a grueling 10 operations and repeated rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, suffering a series of debilitating side effects along the way.
