DEEP: More than 100,000 gallons of sewage, dirty water flows from Massachusetts into the Connecticut River

People are being warned to stay out of the Connecticut River north of Middletown after hundreds of thousands of gallons of sewage and untreated storm water from Massachusetts gushed into a tributary, the Chicopee River in Springfield, Mass., the state’s environmental agency said.

Also, a combination of chlorinated water and possibly some more sewage flowed directly into the Connecticut River because of a water main break in Springfield, said Will Healey, spokesman for the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. At least one of the incidents was a result of Tropical Storm Isaias.

The first leak at Springfield’s Indian Orchard facility happened Tuesday night during a storm-related power loss, Healey said.
