Crews make repairs after severe storms -- and possible tornadoes -- knocked trees into wires, cutting power to more than 50,000; National Guard deployed

Hundreds of crews are working to restore power in southern and western Connecticut after powerful storms, and possibly tornadoes, dropped trees onto wires, homes and cars Thursday afternoon, cutting power to more than 50,000.

New Haven County was hit especially hard, with extensive damage in Branford and Hamden. Residents are being asked to stay off the roads.

There has been one reported injury: A motorist received an electric shock in Westport when the person got out of a car after a tree and live wires fell on it, the National Weather Service said.

A tornado probably touched down in Hamden and possibly in Branford and Bethany, Gary Lessor, chief meteorologist with Western Connecticut State University’s Connecticut Weather Center, said Friday.
