Connecticut leads region in stolen cars

Connecticut had the highest rate of stolen vehicles in the region last year, and some police representatives say the crime -- mostly one of opportunity -- is on the rise in 2020.

AAA on Wednesday highlighted a good news/bad news picture, pointing to a 17% drop in stolen vehicles in the state from 2018 to 2019. The approximately 6000 vehicles taken last year was the lowest figure in five years.

However, AAA spokeswoman Amy Parmenter also pointed to figures from the National Insurance Crime Bureau that showed Connecticut has a higher rate of stolen vehicles per 100,000 people than any surrounding state.
