Community honors retiring Plainville custodian who took care of elementary school since 1978

After nearly 43 years, John Procko is done cleaning the floors at Plainville’s Wheeler Elementary School.

Procko swept and mopped the school’s kitchen Friday, put down the folding tables in the cafeteria one final time and walked out, wrapping up a career that began in 1978.

“It was just going to be a job, I never thought I’d be here this long,” Procko said an hour later at a festive — if nontraditional — retirement farewell.

Because COVID-19 precautions made a traditional going-away party impossible, more than 30 of Wheeler’s teachers and staff members held a car parade past his Woodside Lane house.
