Christmas morning storm knocks out power to 35,000 in Connecticut; rain expected through afternoon

About 35,000 Eversource customers lost power on Christmas morning as a rainstorm with gusty winds swept through the state late Thursday night into Friday.

Preston, Woodbury and Sharon were among the hardest hit towns early in the morning, with 51% of Preston (1,156 households) reported to be out, 40% of Woodbury (2,121) and 68% of Sharon out (1,483). Waterbury had 2,435 outages and Newtown, 2,539.

As of 9:30 a.m., power had been restored to approximately 12,000 of those affected earlier.

“It remains all hands on deck here,” Eversource spokesman Mitch Gross said early Friday morning. “We canceled many employee vacations to respond to the storm.
