Canton rejects controversial EV showroom, fuel station on Route 44

Canton officials on Wednesday night shot down a highly controversial proposal for an electric vehicle showroom and 20-pump Noble fuel station along Route 44, marking a big win for neighbors who’d fought it for months.

Nearby homeowners in Canton, Avon and Simsbury argued that the developer shouldn’t be allowed to destroy a scenic rock ridge at Canton’s eastern gateway, and warned that blasting massive amounts of rock near a Superfund site could contaminate groundwater.

The town’s planning and zoning commission concluded the plan to blast more than 120,000 cubic yards of bedrock on the north side of the highway over 16 months was too extreme.
