A Norwalk teacher who suffers from asthma and cannot wear a face mask has sued the city’s school district after she was told she could not work remotely despite the increased risk if she contracts COVID-19.
In the lawsuit filed in federal court last week, Amanda Fisher, a K-5 health and physical education teacher at Naramake Elementary School, is seeking the district to provide reasonable accommodations and damages for past and future lost income.
The lawsuit hinges on an argument that the school violated federal law protecting those with disabilities. According to the lawsuit, Fisher’s asthma “substantially impairs her in the major life activity of breathing,” and as such, is a disability.
