Students and staff at Windham Middle School, 123 Quarry St. and Sweeney Elementary School, 60 Oak Hill Drive, were told to “shelter in place,” which means they had to stay put and not leave the building.
Students and staff at Eastern Connecticut State University were told to avoid the area of Gem Drive and Roanoak Avenue in Willimantic because of the assault. A suspect, possibly armed with a knife, had fled the area, said Jeffrey A. Garewski, director of public safety.
