An accused triple murderer, unable to post bond and in custody for three years, is asking the state Supreme Court to decide whether pandemic court closures that have repeatedly postponed his trial amount to a violation of his right, and the rights of others in custody, to speedy trials.
Sergio Correa, a Hartford man charged with the especially brutal murder of three members of an eastern Connecticut family in 2017, has been unable to post a $3.35 million bond since his arrest in June 2018 and has tried — and failed — repeatedly to put his case before a jury.
