Former Irvine High varsity football player Austin Hwang diagnosed with terminal cancer

Former Irvine High varsity football player Austin Hwang, described by his former coach Erik Terry as the “consumate teammate who everybody respected,” has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and is in hospice care, Terry said Tuesday night.

Terry said on Tuesday he he visited Hwang, who is in hospice care, at the La Mirada home of the family’s pastor, who along with another pastor and his mother are taking care of him.

Hwang (class of 2016) played varsity football for Irvine in 2014 and 2015. In his senior season, he started off and on at linebacker, despite battling injuries, Terry said.
