With the selection, the Falcons made Pitts (6-foot-6, 245 pounds) the highest drafted tight end in the history of the NFL Draft, just ahead of former Chicago Bears coach and former Pitt star Mike Ditka, who was the fifth pick in 1961 by the Bears. The Denver Broncos also selected a tight end at No. 5 in 1972 with Riley Odoms of Houston.
