- Played his senior season at Bloom High School averaging 15 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocked shots in helping Bloom post a 28-6 record.
- He earned all-state and all-conference recognition as a senior and was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the south suburban area.
- Shumate was one of five Bloom starters to sign a Division I basketball scholarship.
- He was named to the Chicago Heights Thanksgiving Classic all-tournament team after registering a triple-double with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 10 blocks in the championship game against Marian Catholic and also earned all-tournament team honors at the Pontiac Holiday Tournament
