MELBOURNE, Australia –– Former Tulsa Golden Hurricane tennis star Marcelo Arvelo (2009-11) and his doubles partner Matwe Middelkoop advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Arvelo, ranked 52nd in the World for doubles, and Middelkoop won three matches to make it to the quarterfinal round where the duo fell 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday to Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares.
In the first and third rounds, Arvelo/Middelkoop fell behind one set by identical 7-6 scores. In the opening round, the tandem defeated Marcelo Demoliner and Santiago Gonzalez 7-6, 6-3 after falling behind after losing the first set.
