What Troy football coach Chip Lindsay said about who's starting at quarterback at Sun Belt Media Day

NEW ORLEANS – Troy football coach Chip Lindsay will spend the next several weeks weighing whether returnee Gunnar Watson or Missouri transfer Taylor Powell will start at quarterback in 2021.

The decision could pivot largely on turnovers, or lack thereof, Lindsay suggested during the Sun Belt Conference’s football Media Day on Thursday.

Watson threw for 2,141 yards and 16 touchdowns with a league-best 70.1 completion percentage in 2020 for the 5-6 Trojans. But he was intercepted seven times in 301 attempts.

“He’ll tell you hisself he’s got to take care of the ball better, and, really, the one that does is probably gonna be the one that wins the job,” Lindsay said.
