LAFAYETTE – Troy took an early 7-0 lead with five runs in the top of the third and held on for an 8-5 victory over Louisiana to clinch the Sun Belt series at Russo Park Saturday afternoon.
Troy (16-7, 3-2) staved off a fierce comeback by the Ragin' Cajuns (9-13, 1-4) to clinch the series in Lafayette for the first time since 2012.
The five-run third started when Joey Denison squared for a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error to an absent third baseman plated two runs. Three batters after Denison scored on a wild pitch, Chase Smartt drove in two on a single up the middle to put Troy up by seven.
