Troy Trojans taken down in a surprise loss at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The moment Sawyer Smith’s last-gasp pass was batted down around midfield, Troy coach Neal Brown threw off his headset and began the customary walk to midfield for the postgame handshake.

The Liberty players were celebrating a 22-16 victory over the Trojans on both sides of Brown and his players, and the sun-splashed fall Saturday afternoon at Williams Stadium was anything but fun for a Troy team that saw its lengthy road winning streak snapped.

“They played good. Hats off to them,” Brown said of Liberty. “That was bad football. I don’t know how else to say it.
