Jon Johnson column: 1987 Troy national title team set the tone

TROY – An opening-season loss may be an indicator of more troubles ahead, or either jumpstart a team to greatness.

It turned out to be a defining moment for the 1987 national championship Troy football team, which was honored on the field Saturday afternoon between the first and second quarters of the Trojans’ home opener against Alabama State.

“We knew we had the opportunity to have a great team,” said Skipperville native Jimbo Payne, who was a senior fullback on the team. “We had one of our guys get up to make a speech and we decided we were going to turn it around, and we did.
