TROY – Troy failed in its bid to sweep UT Arlington, which salvaged Sunday’s game in the best-of-three series in a 16-11 slugfest at Riddle-Pace Field.
Six Troy pitchers gave up a combined five home runs – two to Noah Vaughan in the first six innings as the Mavericks built a 7-3 lead.
In the seventh, Troy (30-14, 13-8 Sun Belt) loaded the bases on three consecutive free passes to begin the inning. Then, back-to-back doubles from Drew Frederic – who cleared the bases – and Joey Denison tied the game.
The visitors broke it open with eight runs in the eighth as the Mavericks (21-23, 11-10) strung together seven hits and a costly Troy error to pull away.
