Tottenham will have to beat history if they want to win against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu... only two English sides have done it in Europe

If Tottenham Hotspur are looking for positive signs ahead of their game against Real Madrid, they would do well to avoid looking at the record books.

English sides have not fared well on their travels to the Santiago Bernabeu over the years, with only two teams ever emerging from the stadium with a win in the Champions League.

Those sides were Arsenal in 2006 and Liverpool in 2009, who each won their game in the Spanish capital 1-0.

And while Spurs would not want to compare themselves with Arsenal, it would be worth noting that as one of two winners at the Bernabeu, they went on to reach the final of the competition.
