Nelson Mandela was released from prison, became president and died
Having been incarcerated for 27 years, anti-apartheid campaigner Mandela was released on 11 February, 1990, a day after Spurs’ win at the Bridge. In the years since, he won the Nobel Peace Prize (1993), was elected South Africa’s first black president (1994), retired from public life (2004) and died at the age of 95 in 2013.
