As Alan Shearer explains in his column in The Sun, the massive investment going into clubs is to make an instant impact on the biggest stage.
"[Jose] Mourinho and [Pep] Guardiola know what it is to rule in Europe and I am expecting big things from them this season," he wrote.
And although he acknowledges Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are currently a level above the Premier League teams, Shearer believes that does not mean our teams cannot challenge the heavyweights.
