Barcelona denied Andre Gomes a loan move to Tottenham on Thursday after admitting defeat in their quest to sign Philippe Coutinho.
The La Liga giants began the day convinced Liverpool would sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco, thus making Coutinho more available.
Barca were happy to send Gomes out on loan to Tottenham or West Ham, with the player favouring a move to Spurs.
But Monaco's strong-willed refusal to sell Lemar forced the Catalan side to reconsider their position and they decided to keep Gomes as a squad player.
