Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou said Newcastle's difficult season should act as a warning if Spurs secure Champions League football.
Newcastle made a return to European football's elite competition after they finished fourth last season.
But they have struggled with competing on multiple fronts and are 13 points behind fourth-placed Spurs in eighth spot going into Saturday's meeting.
"Certainly there is a cautionary tale there," the 58-year-old said.
"It has been tough on Newcastle this year because the progress last year was fantastic.
"The reward for that was Champions League and this year, for whatever reason, it has made it a really challenging season on all fronts for them.
