Can Spurs Compete For Talent With Their Current Wage Structure?

The Tottenham Spurs have just announced that they are to sign Ajax center back Davison Sanchez for a fee of around £42 million. One question that has been rife again this summer is whether Spurs can compete within the bounds of their current wage structure; with many pundits betting that the club will struggle. This was brought to light even more after left back Danny Rose publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with his current earnings and that he would be open to offers elsewhere. This was also down to the lack of success the club have had, and again many feel that the wage structure is to blame in part.

To get top players into your club, most of the time you need to pay them top wages. In Spurs’ case, the wage structure is strict, especially when you compare it to the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United. There is no way that the current structure would allow Spurs to sign players like Paul Pogba or even Romelu Lukaku. This has left many believing, and that includes some Spurs fans, that they will be left behind by their big spending rivals. This has been reflected in the overall betting on which club is most likely to win the title.

Spurs will once again be competing on all fronts, including in the UEFA Champions League and this means a quality squad with strength in depth is key. As other sides continue to recruit, Spurs, apart from Davison Sanchez, have failed to strengthen. They look set to put their trust in the youth set up once again and this does make them weaker compared to clubs like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United. Tottenham Hotspurs can compete and have shown as much, but with other sides getting ahead of them and teams like Everton potentially getting closer to them, their task this season looks even harder, especially in their new temporary Wembley home.

Mauricio Pochettino, to many, is an extremely impressive coach, who will win things. So far he’s not won anything at Spurs in terms of trophies but he has got them playing Champions League football. He’s expressed numerous times how Spurs are making progress and building but there isn’t the same urgency to win the title in the short term, as there is at other clubs in the top flight. You can see what he means but surely Spurs fans want to aim for the title this season?

Pochettino may just have been saying that to take the pressure of his side as they embark on another season in the top flight. They will be in and around it, there’s no doubt about that. The minimum aim must be the top 4 and they have a good chance of achieving that; with most online sports betting operators like Unibet making them third favorites’ at 8/1 to win the title after the two Manchester clubs. The title may be out of reach though, as apart from the likes of Harry Kane and Dele Alli, Spurs look a lot weaker than their rivals and will continue in this manner unless the financial side of things change, to make them real contenders. If it doesn’t and Spurs don’t achieve any success, the likes of Kane and Alli could see their future’s elsewhere, just as Kyle Walker did this summer.

However, Pochettino is confident that his present set of players will be able to cope and do the business this season; so we can only hope the club will be able to make the fans proud.
