Maybe in all those weeks and months when people were excoriating Masai Ujiri and Bobby Webster, the Raptors’ brainiacs were just waiting for the right fit for what they want to accomplish.
Maybe while fans were bleating for a “real” centre to ride in and rescue a too-small, too-thin roster, the Raptors’ president and his general manager were just waiting for what they need for the longer term to present itself. Maybe there was no obvious panic move to be made from the unemployment roll or on the trade market.
Now, as they have done countless times before, the men at the top are reaping the benefits of waiting until what they saw as the right opportunity presented itself.
