‘The future of sports.’ Mixed reality viewing experiences coming for NHL, NBA fans

What’s it like to stand on the court between Pascal Siakam and O.G. Anunoby?

Or how about seeing real-time stats about Auston Matthews — superimposed on the defensive forward during a live game?

If Monday night’s media event at Scotiabank Arena is any indication, both scenarios are possible, thanks to a new research and development program, SportsX, jointly unveiled by Toronto’s MLSE Digital Labs, the technology and digital innovation arm of MLSE, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Building upon a partnership announced a year ago, the new SportsX incubator was created to fuse technology and sports, primarily through mixed reality experiences, to enhance the fan experience, along with other applications — such as helping teams prep for upcoming games or providing broadcasters with extra fodder for deeper analysis and presentation tools.
