Spurs win NBA draft lottery — and No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama; Raptors stay at 13

Every quarter century or so, the San Antonio Spurs hit the motherlode at the NBA’s draft lottery.

The franchise that landed a generational talent in Tim Duncan by winning the 1997 lottery got the chance to draft another brilliant young big man — France’s Victor Wembanyama — by winning the 2023 sweepstakes on Tuesday night.

The Raptors, meanwhile, had no luck go their way and will retain the 13th overall pick in the June 22 draft.

The Spurs had the third-worst record last season at 22-60 and, along with the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets, had a 14 per cent chance at landing the top pick.
