HONOLULU—The pull of the crescent-shaped beach in Kailua is strong, a sandy stretch of tropical paradise about 25 kilometres from Waikiki that’s a hugely popular spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing and whiling away blissful hours.
If you live there, you go there because it’s life in the city of roughly 40,000, sleepy and picturesque and light years removed from the bustling, touristy heart of Waikiki.
But life is more than the beach, and about 15 years ago a dozen or so kids decided basketball would be their thing. They had no idea what it would do for them later in their lives, but they loved the game and that’s all that mattered.
