Gary Trent Jr. steps up for Raptors in win over Magic: ‘He’s taken that challenge.’

The plays came within seconds of each other and perfectly capture one of the most surprising aspects of this NBA season so far for the Raptors.

Orlando’s Jalen Suggs was driving hard to the basket. He had Gary Trent Jr. on his right hip, and it looked all the world like he would have an unimpeded path to the bucket when Trent stuck a hand out and knocked the ball out of bounds.

Seconds later, he simply blew up a high screen play by busting through the pick to cause another Magic turnover.

They were smart, aggressive, hustling defensive plays, the kind the Raptors thought Trent could make but none were certain he would.
