Fred VanVleet’s defence, and one special shot, helped flush the Warriors’ chances in opener

If there was a moment when it became clear the Raptors were going to win Game 1 of the NBA Finals, maybe it came courtesy of Fred VanVleet.

A little more than three minutes remained in regulation. The Warriors, making a final, urgent push, had pulled within 10 points. And as an important Toronto possession was coming down to the final few ticks of the 24-second shot clock, Kawhi Leonard passed the ball to VanVleet in the left corner.

The hot-shooting hero of the Eastern Conference final — he of the now-legendary 82% three-point accuracy in Games 4, 5 and 6 — seemed like a well-appointed candidate to bail out the Raptors in a crucial short-clock situation.
