Masai Ujiri and his staff should have been fanned out around the world, watching games in Europe and North America, tracking players and gathering information. And they should have been paying intense attention to the Raptors in what would have been a very telling week.
Instead, the Raptors president jokes that he’s “stalking Dr. Fauci like the next NBA draft pick” and putting the business of basketball very much on the back burner.
“It’s not kind of where our minds are at right now,” Ujiri said in a conference call with reporters this week.
There are basketball things the Raptors could be concerned about, chief among them the long-term future of Ujiri and head coach Nick Nurse, both of whom will be looking for new contracts whenever this season ends.
