The day Andy Wingate went to camp is remembered fondly in his household — his family tease him because he came back home that same day.

“I didn’t really go,” he said. “I was homesick.”

Back in 1955, when he was seven years old, Wingate was a Fresh Air Fund recipient — a Toronto Star initiative that helps to send 25,000 children who can’t afford the regular fees to camp.

His family had just immigrated to Canada from Scotland, and there weren’t a lot of opportunities for a newcomer kid to go to camp, Wingate said.
