Toronto FC confirms Jozy Altidore battling quad injury, hopeful he’ll be ready for playoffs

Toronto FC striker Jozy Altidore suffered a quadriceps injury over the weekend, the club confirmed Wednesday.

Altidore left the Reds’ regular-season finale against the Columbus Crew on Sunday in the 70th minute after going down awkwardly when defender Jonathan Mensah slid to block a shot by the 29-year-old forward just outside the six-yard box. He walked off the field on his own but had a slight limp as he entered the tunnel.

Toronto went on to win the game 1-0, a victory that helped earn the team home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Coach Greg Vanney told reporters post-game that Altidore’s quad was “sore” and he would undergo an MRI to assess the severity of the issue and the timeline for his return.
